Dubai: Five key industries will benefit from Dubai hosting Expo 2020, a new report commissioned by the Federal Authority of Human Resources (FAHR), has found.
The new report, conducted by The Talent Enterprise, to study human capital opportunities from the Expo, found that hospitality, transportation, retail, banking and finance as well as real estate and infrastructure will witness key growth and so will need to expand.
Radhika Punshi, consulting director at The Talent Enterprise who wrote the report, said Emiratis will benefit from the expansion of these industries. “Careers in retail, hospitality, media, advertising, etc, will look increasingly promising and exciting for the younger generation of Emiratis. As a result this will help elevate the status of vocational education.”
A growth in entrepreneurial businesses and the creation of small SMEs is also predicted.
A recent report by Standard Chartered estimates that around 300,000 direct jobs and around a million indirect jobs will be created in the UAE by 2020. Since 25 to 30 million people are expected to visit during the expo, 90 per cent of the jobs available will be in the travel and tourism sector. These job opportunities are expected to be created from 2018 to 2021.
The report predicts that skills in customer service, engineering, architecture, urban planning and infrastructure development will be in high demand during the preparation for Expo 2020.
Women are also expected to shine during the expo as Punshi said with the higher average levels of educational attainment, greater availability and better workplace skills, more women will choose to join the formal workplace.
“To come out with these estimates we have looked at what happened in countries that hosted the expo and studied the possible opportunities and outcomes here in the UAE,” said Punshi.
During a press conference, Dr Abdul Rahman Al Awar, Director-General of FAHR, announced that the full report will be unveiled during The FAHR International Forum 2014.
The forum, which will take place from April 29 to 30 at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre, will have 23 main speakers who are human resource experts and leaders from 10 different countries.
Al Awar said the forum will focus on sustainable human resources that will support the national agendas.
The keynote speech will be delivered by the Minister of Education, Humaid Al Qutami, who is also Chairman of FAHR.
The international speakers include Henry Jackson, President and Chief Executive Officer at CPA, and Robert Lavigna, Assistant Vice-Chancellor and Director of HR at the University of Wisconsin.
The forum, which will be held under the patronage of Shaikh Hamdan Bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, will present an ideal opportunity to human resource executives and business leaders to share ideas.
