Dubai: The holy city of Mecca in Saudi Arabia has been hit by flash flooding after heavy rains all over southern Saudi Arabia, local media reported.

Torrential floods washed away cars and people in Mecca on Tuesday following heavy rain and thunderstorm.

Social media exploded with videos and images of cars submerging and people being washed away by the flooding.

A few days earlier, authorities warned people about heavy rain and thunderstorms in Mecca, Medina, Al Baha, Jazan and Najran with possible flooding in the Eastern Province, Riyadh and Qassim as well as light rains across Jawf, Tabuk and the northern borders.
