Saudi Arabia unveils project to protect endangered plants

Cairo: Saudi authorities have unveiled an ambitious scheme to preserve local plants, especially those threatened with extinction.

The Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture has sealed a cooperation agreement with an environmental group in Saudi Arabia’s central governorate of Al Qassimto protect indigenous plants, Okaz newspaper has reported.

The project features a unit for multiplying local and grassy plans, a seed bank and a botanical garden, an environmental official said.

“Support from the government bodies concerned with the wildlife and the private sector as well as the businessmen is enough to render successful this project that will benefit botanical life and bio-diversity not only in Al Qassim, but the whole of the kingdom,” ecological advisor Abdulrahaman Al Saqir said.
