Kuwait Emir names landmark after Mubarak
Gesture appreciates late Egyptian president’s opposition to Saddam’s 1990 invasion
Cairo: Kuwait’s Emir Shaikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Sabah has ordered that one of the landmarks in the Gulf country be named after Egypt’s former president Hosni Mubarak who died earlier this week.
While in office, Mubarak sent troops to join a US-led military alliance that liberated Kuwait months after Saddam Hussain’s 1990 invasion of the country.
“The State of Kuwait with its leadership and people, remember with all gratitude and appreciation his [Mubarak’s] historic, firm stances and his pivotal role in forming Arab opposition since the first moments of Saddam’s treacherous invasion of the State of Kuwait,” the Kuwait cabinet said.
“In response to an order from his Highness the Emir of the country, in appreciation of the standing of the late leader and in honour of his memory, the Cabinet has decided to give his name to one of the important landmarks in the State of Kuwait,” it added in a statement without details.
Mubarak died on Tuesday in a military hospital in Cairo aged 91. His death was due to chronic kidney and heart problems, according to an official medical report. A 2011 uprising forced him to resign after nearly 30 years in power.
