Kuwait curbs employment of foreign teachers
Hiring non-Kuwaitis for teaching four subjects allowed under strict conditions
Cairo: Kuwait’s state Civil Service Commission has set conditions for hiring foreign teachers as the country is seeking to redress its demographic imbalance, a media reported said today.
The commission has required the Education Ministry not to employ any non-Kuwaiti teacher without its approval, Al Anba newspaper reported, citing well-informed sources.
The file of each expatriate teacher will have to be sent to the commission to be revised to ensure meeting conditions set for appointment, the sources said.
The conditions include the requirement that the would-be appointee has entered Kuwait on a teacher’s visa.
The sources specified four subjects whose foreign teachers can be employed during the current school year, namely chemistry, physics, maths and the Arabic language.
Their employment would still hinge on other factors such as age and job experience.
There have been increasing calls in Kuwait over recent months to redress the demographic imbalance, prompting several government bodies to disclose plans to minimise numbers of their expatriate employees.
Foreigners account for nearly 3.4 million of Kuwait’s 4.8 million population.
