Kuwait concerned over Iran threats to Hormuz
We hope reason and peace will prevail in this vital region, Kuwaiti minister says
Kuwait City: Kuwait has expressed concern over recent Iranian threats to close the vital Strait of Hormuz amid an escalating row between Tehran and the US.
“We look with concern at these threats,” Kuwait’s Deputy Foreign Minister Khaled Al Jarallah told the official Kuwaiti news agency KUNA.
“We always look forward to seeing our region staying clear of these tensions. We hope reason, wisdom and peace will prevail in this vital region,” he added in the remarks released late Sunday.
Around one third of the world’s sea-borne oil passes through the Strait of Hormuz, which links the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Gulf.
Iran is increasingly under international pressure to stop its destabilising acts in the Arab region.
Last week, the US declared ending sanctions waivers for Iranian oil imports as part of Washington’s stepped-up campaign against the Tehran regime.
Last year, US President Donald Trump re-imposed sanctions on Iran after he pulled out his country of a 2015 international nuclear deal with Tehran.
The aim of the move was to pressure Iran financially and politically to curb its interference in the domestic affairs of neighbouring Arab countries.
