Kuwait: By-elections in fifth district opened to fill vacant seat
Four candidates registered on first day, registration will continue for ten days
Kuwait City: On Thursday, the Ministry of Interior opened the door for candidates looking to participate in the by-election in the fifth electoral district, after Bader Al Dahoum’s membership was revoked last month, leaving an empty seat vacant.
The Department of Election Affairs at the Ministry of Interior stated that on the first day of registrations four candidates applied. The registration will continue for ten days, which will then be followed by an election just in the fifth district.
Only one candidate will move on to winning a seat in Kuwait’s National Assembly (parliament).
Revoked membership
A month ago, Kuwait’s Constitutional Court issued a ruling that annuls membership of prominent opposition figure Al Dahoum based on a previous case where he was charged with “insulting the Emir”.
The court revoked Al Dahoum’s membership as per a 2016 law that states anyone convicted of insulting the Emir will be barred from partaking in the parliamentary elections.
