Iranian foreign minister Mohammad Zarif in Kuwait

Zarif arrived in Kuwait Saturday for a visit tackling ties and regional scene

Kuwait City: Kuwait’s Crown Prince Shaikh Nawaf Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah on Sunday met Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, now visiting the country, Kuwait’s official news agency KUNA reported.

Attending the meeting was Kuwaiti Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Shaikh Sabah Al Khaled Al Hamad, the agency added without details.

Later Sunday, Minister Sabah discussed with Zarif “aspects of joint cooperation” between Kuwait and Iran as well as the ongoing developments in the region, KUNA reported.

Zarif had arrived in Kuwait on Saturday for a two-day visit amid heightened tensions between Iran and the West over Tehran’s commitments to a 2015 nuclear deal and recent mysterious attacks on commercial ships in the Gulf. The US has blamed Iran for the attacks.

The tensions peaked last month after Iran seized a Britain-flagged oil tanker in the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.

Earlier this week, Zarif visited Qatar, an ally of Tehran.
