Pakistan: Chinese, Spanish firms to help dispose municipal waste in Karachi

Karachi: The Sindh government has contracted the services of Chinese and Spanish companies to help solid waste disposal work in two main districts of Karachi.

Agreements with the foreign firms were signed at the Chief Minister’s House with Sindh CM Syed Murad Ali Shah in the chair. The Chinese company will work in the Korangi district and the Spanish firm will provide its services in the Central district of Karachi. The Sindh Solid Waste Management Board (SSWMB) has contracted the services of the two firms, which will start work from the second week of August.

Managing-Director of SSWMB, Zubair Channa, said that the municipal waste disposal work of entire Karachi had been outsourced.

The SSWMB started solid waste disposal work in Karachi in 2016 from districts South and East of the city. The garbage collection work was later expanded to the districts West, Keamari, and Malir of Karachi.

Shah said his government had been working on the project to utilise municipal waste generated in Karachi for renewable power generation. Work on such a waste-to-energy plant will soon begin with the capability of generating 40 Megawatts of clean electricity.

Sindh Law and Environment Adviser, Barrister Murtaza Wahab, expressed pleasure that a scientific system would now be utilised to collect and safely dispose of garbage generated in Karachi.

Over 14,000 tonnes of solid waste is generated daily in Karachi.
