Karachi: Services of a Chinese company have been engaged to launch for the first time a proper system of collection of waste from the Korangi industrial estate in Karachi.

The company - Gansu Construction Investment Heavy Industry Technology - after launching of waste collection system in the industrial estate will expand its door-to-door service to entire District Korangi of Karachi in next three months.

The full-scale implementation of the system will lift 2,000 tonnes of municipal waste daily generated in entire Korangi.

Karachi’s Administrator, Barrister Murtaza Wahab, appreciated that the Korangi Association of Trade and Industry (KATI) had become the first body of the industrialists in the city to sign a contract with the SSWMB for launching the proper waste collection system.

He said the agreement would allow the Sindh government to get the help of the industrial units for launching an effective and sustainable waste management system in the city.

He hoped that the system would enable Korangi industrial estate to emerge as the modern industrial zone in Karachi where a proper sanitation system was in place.

Saleem-uz-Zaman, former KATI president, said the industrialists in the Korangi industrial estate were willing to pay a fee to the SSWMB for launching of the door-to-door waste collection system.

He hoped that in the next phase a system would be put in place for launching of the specialised process for disposal of the hazardous industrial waste.

The new system envisages for the first time a system of collection of monthly fee ranging from Rs 3,000 to Rs 10,000 from every industry, depending on its size, for disposal of its waste.
