New Delhi: Taking a jibe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, former Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU) leader Kanhaiya Kumar has called him an “incompetent” son who failed to take care of his 98-year-old mother.

“Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been saying that people make disrespectful remarks against his mother. I am not saying anything about his mother, I am calling him ‘nalayak’ [incompetent],” Kumar said during a public event on late Sunday evening.

Kumar referred to Modi’s statement that Congress party was behind the attacks against his mother and other family members.

“The PM has failed to take care of his mother who is now 98 years old. It is tragic he can’t be a good son,” Kumar added at the event attended by Patidar community leader Hardik Patel and Gujarat legislator Jignesh Mewani.

The student leader also called Modi a “good actor”.

“Only an incompetent son can make his old mother stand in a bank queue during demonetisation. Modi would have received the best actor award had he been in Bollywood,” Kumar commented.

Earlier in the day, the PM had claimed that the verbal attack by various leaders on him and his family members was at the behest of Congress President Rahul Gandhi.

“What has happened to the Congress party? They are tacitly supporting such comments. They are dragging the name of my father, who passed away 30 years ago. They are dragging the name of my mother now,” Modi said at a public rally in Madhya Pradesh.

He alleged that no Congressman, in particular, would make such a statement against him without the consent of party president.

“It is Rahul Gandhi who is making these leaders speak against me,” Modi stated.

He said Gandhi should refrain from supporting such people who make ill-meant personal comments.

“My mother sits in her house, performing religious rites, confining herself to a room, and has never visited Madhya Pradesh. She does not even know the ‘R’ of ‘rajneeti’ (politics). The Congress chief is clearly behind this,” the PM added.

Kumar’s tirade against Modi came in the backdrop of several Congress leaders’ recent attacks on Modi.

Last month, actor-turned-politician Raj Babbar had likened the condition of falling rupee to the age of Modi’s mother.

“Before becoming PM, Narendra Modi used to say that the value of the rupee has fallen to a level where it is almost the same as the age of then PM Manmohan Singh. Now, it is inching towards the age of Modi’s mother,” Babbar had said.

Responding to that, Modi had said that Congress leaders were abusing his family as the party was bereft of issues.

“Congress party has no worthwhile issue to talk of. They lack strength to face me after suffering one defeat after another. In the last 17-18 years, I have challenged you at every instance and defeated you. And you are dragging my mother into politics? Does this behove the Congress and its leaders?” Modi said.
