Dubai: Blinded by superstition, a woman living in the Indian state of Bihar, cut off her tongue as an offering to a deity, so that her missing daughter-in-law would come back home safely. Twitter users in the country are sharing reports about the incident that happened on Sunday evening.
According to the police, the woman was identified as Lakshmi Nirala, who works as a domestic help in Jharkhand.
Reportedly, on the evening of August 14, Nirala's daughter-in-law Jyoti went missing with her child. After this, Nirala started praying for Jyoti’s safe return.
Her husband Nandu Lal Nirala said that the family started searching for Jyoti on Friday, but, failed to locate her. Nandu, and his son then approached the police on Saturday evening. He said: “We searched for Jyoti throughout the night on Friday, but could not find her. Later, I went to the police with my son but was told to come next morning. Since Saturday was Independence Day, we went to police in the evening.”
Apparently, on Sunday, Laxmi who is in her forties, cut off her tongue and offered it to a Hindu deity, after somebody advised her that it would help bring Jyoti back. Her husband Nadu said: “Someone told her that if she offers her tongue to the deity, Jyoti would return.”
