Video: One killed, two injured while carrying out maintenance work in Sharjah residential tower

Compressor of air-conditioning unit burst while the equipment was being checked

Sharjah: One person was killed and two others were injured while carrying out maintenance work on the air-conditioning units at a residential building comprising 22 floors here on Thursday morning.

The compressor of one of the air-conditioning units burst while the technicians of the maintenance company were checking the equipment and other electrical installations in the residential tower, causing the death of a Pakistani worker and seriously injuring two others.

The injured were moved to Al Qassimi Hospital by the police who arrived on the spot soon after the accident. Residents of around 50 apartments in the building were moved to hotel apartments.

The accident was reported to the police operation room at 11 am.

Forensic experts and the civil defence team along with police patrols had rushed to the site.

Colonel Yousf bin Harmoul, director of the Comprehensive Police Stations Department at the Sharjah Police General Headquarters, stated that a report had been received at 11am on Thursday morning stating that a loud sound was heard in one of the air-conditioning units at a residential tower located on Al Wahda Road in the emirate.

It was found during the inspection and the initial investigation procedures that the mishap occurred when technicians of the company authorised to carry out maintenance work for electrical appliances carried out repairs on the compressor, causing the death of one of the maintenance technicians and seriously injuring two others.

They were immediately transferred by the National Ambulance to Al Qasimi Hospital to receive necessary first aid and medical care.

Colonel bin Harmoul indicated that forensic and fire experts were assigned to find out the cause of the accident, while the body of the deceased was transferred to the hospital morgue and forensic laboratory based on the order of the Public Prosecution.

Meanwhile, a company spokesperson told Gulf News that there were four workers carrying out maintenance work at the top of the building and one of them had gone down to bring some material. Residents of about 50 apartments were shifted to hotel apartments as their AC units were affected.

The company will bear the expense of their stay.

The building consists of 22 floors, with each floor having 12 apartments.
