Spot checks on trucks in Abu Dhabi find unsafe or unsuitable tyres in over half the cases
Around 27 per cent of tyres examined had issues such as irregular or uneven wear
Abu Dhabi: Spot checks recently found unsafe or unsuitable tyres in around half the cases of heavy trucks inspected in Abu Dhabi.
Around 29 per cent of trucks on Abu Dhabi-Al Ain Truck Road were found to have under or over-inflated tyres; while almost 27 per cent of tyres examined had issues ranging from irregular and uneven wear of tyres. The findings were the result of a recent one-day inspection by Michelin and Central Motors and Equipment (CM&E), in partnership with Abu Dhabi Police.
The road safety awareness campaign targeting heavy commercial vehicle drivers also revealed that some trucks had brake jam problems, which can endanger the lives of both the driver and other road users if not addressed immediately.
Reaching truck drivers
Naser Shashaa, commercial director of the Middle East and North Africa cluster at Michelin, said: “Michelin is fully committed to road accident prevention efforts. [We] have devoted significant efforts to road security recognition and education campaigns globally. We are glad to be partnering with Abu Dhabi Police in this effort to bring about safety behaviour among heavy vehicle drivers in the region.”
Free safety checks and guidance
The day-long awareness campaign consisted of free vehicle inspection, including checks on tyres, brakes, oil leakages, headlights, wipers, and other technical issues. Drivers were also given professional recommendations and safety tips.
Sami Messaoudi, general manager of CM&E, which is part of Al Fahim Group, said: “We believe tyres are very essential to vehicle safety and security. Our aim is to elevate recognition regarding tyre security, accountable driving and much safer transportation of goods and people.”
