UAE

If it's dune bashing, it has to be Gulf News Fun Drive

The 38th Gulf News Overnighter Fun Drive flagged off with much fan-fare on Friday. The Fun Drive took off from Al Fathiya in Hameem road, the starting point, to the finishing line, the Moreeb dunes at the beginning of the Empty Quarter.

Over 800 four-wheel vehicles are revved up for the region’s biggest off-roading event. For the uninitiated, the Moreeb dune at Empty Quarter is the highest dune in the UAE offering a breath-taking backdrop.

Her husband Pradeep said: "I've been driving for 20+ years, and it's my first time to join a desert fun drive. We've done some camping and all but not full-fledge (desert outing). "I was not sure initially if could complete (the drive), but I'm thankful for the team," Pradeep added.

Kapoor quipped: "Seriously amazed, Gulf News really organised it well. Thank You."

Marshals Pradish Thomas and Anit Zhakur stand proud after rescuing four people from a SUV that was wedged in deep in the dunes at last year's Fun Drive. According to expert marshals, a common mistake that people commit is that they don’t maintain safe distance from the vehicle in front. If you keep your distance right, you can see what is happening in front. As a rule of thumb in the desert, if you stop right you start right. If you stop flat, you cannot start and go forward with ease. Always stop on an incline so you have a rolling start. Remember the sand is soft and flat and wheels move in a clock-wise rotation. As a result, you can totally dig yourself in if you don’t take care. Also, never park behind a vehicle and check your tire pressure. Check your tire pressure every hour as heat can build up inside due to the friction with the wheels. Everything else is bottled down to common sense.
