Cairo: The Prophet’s Mosque, Islam’s second holiest site in the Saudi city of Medina, received 5.4 million worshippers and visitors last week, amid a seamless network of services and care, according to figures from the state agency responsible for managing the site.
The General Authority for the Care of the Prophet’s Mosque stated that the figure includes 376,765 Muslims who visited and prayed at Al Rawda Al Sharifa, where the tomb of Prophet Mohammed (Peace Be Upon Him) is located.
The visits followed crowd-management protocols, with separate schedules for men and women.
Saudi authorities have repeatedly emphasized that visitors to Al Rawda Al Sharifa must make prior reservations and arrive at the designated time for smooth access.
In the past week, 31,739 non-Arabic-speaking worshippers benefited from multilingual communication services provided at the mosque, the agency added in a weekly update.
Sterilisation and disinfection work across the mosque involved the use of more than 24,000 liters of disinfectant. Additionally, 1,480 tons of Zamzam water were provided to worshippers, while 136,283 fast-breaking (Iftar) meals were distributed at designated locations within the mosque.
After performing Umrah, the minor pilgrimage at Islam’s holiest site in Mecca, many pilgrims travel to Medina to offer prayers at the Prophet’s Mosque and visit other Islamic landmarks in the city.
In 2023, more than 280 million Muslims prayed at the Prophet’s Mosque.
