Manama: Kuwait's government has no plans to resign or to swap ministerial portfolios to avoid possible investigation of its ministers, Kuwaiti sources have said.
Rumours of a limited cabinet reshuffle to dodge an impending grilling of the information minister gained in intensity this week in Kuwait City, forcing parliamentary blocs to retreat into a "wait and see" situation.
"The government is standing and ready to confront any grilling of its ministers," the unnamed sources were quoted as saying by the Kuwaiti daily Al Anba.
"Whatever is happening, there will be no resignation, no reshuffling of the cabinet, no dismissing of a minister or swapping of ministerial posts. The government is well determined to move forward and to face any call to quiz ministers," they told the newspaper.
Several lawmakers have been lately talking about the "inevitable" grilling of Shaikh Ahmad Al Abdullah, the information minister who is also in charge of the oil portfolio
The minister has come under fire following the broadcasting of a controversial programme by a privately-owned television station which contained an alleged denigration of Bedouins who make up half of the elected lawmakers in the parliament.
A series of street rallies and angry media comments have pressured MPs to seek to quiz the minister.
The Popular Bloc in the parliament has suggested a compromise that would allow Al Abdullah to remain in charge of the oil portfolio, but leave the information ministry for a new minister.
Four ministers, including the prime minister, were quizzed by the parliament last December amid charges of alleged financial or management irregularities. All ministers were cleared of any wrongdoing, a development that prompted claims that the grilling was mainly for electoral purposes.
The prime minister last autumn said that the government would not resign despite the repeated calls to quiz ministers and that the parliament would last until the end of its term.
