Kuwait calls for end to onslaught on divine religions

Manama: Kuwait has called for strong action to curb the "increasing onslaught on divine religions and their sanctities."

Malek Al Wazzan, Counselor of the Permanent Kuwaiti delegation at the UN in Geneva, said the phenomenon of indiscrimination and fanaticism against individual Muslims was mounting in a manner that affected their personal freedoms and rights of practicing their beliefs.

High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay should consider action for countering the spread of Islamophobia, acts and rhetoric intended to tarnish religions and to incite hatred, indiscrimination and violence against Muslims, Al Wazzan said, in an address at a session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), Kuwait news Agency (Kuna) reported on Wednesday.

Training and education could be used to boost the values of tolerance, equality and respect for racial, religious and cultural diversity, he said.
