Islamabad: Pakistan's Supreme Court has backed the release of an Islamist militant leader who India accuses of masterminding the 2008 attacks on the Indian city of Mumbai, dismissing government appeals against his release.

Pakistan's central government and a provincial government had challenged the release of Hafiz Mohammad Saeed, founder of Lashka E Taiba militant group, by a high court last year.
