Patna: Early trends from the Election Commission of India (ECI) show the NDA surpassing the crucial milestone of 122 seats in the Bihar Assembly elections, leading in over 150 seats in the 243-member house.
As of 10:30 a.m., the NDA was leading in 172 seats:
BJP: 73
JD(U): 77
LJP(RV): 18
HAM(S): 4
The opposition Mahagathbandhan was leading in 54 seats:
RJD: 42
Congress: 7
CPI(ML)(L): 5
A majority in the Bihar Assembly requires 122 seats.
The counting of votes began at 8 a.m. with postal ballots, followed by EVM votes at 8:30 a.m. Counting is being conducted under multi-tiered security arrangements across the state.
NDA leaders claimed that the results reflected public faith in Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s development record. Meanwhile, the Mahagathbandhan, led by RJD, asserted that Bihar had “voted for change” and expressed optimism about Tejashwi Yadav forming the next government.
The process is overseen by 243 Returning Officers and an equal number of Counting Observers, with over 18,000 counting agents monitoring the proceedings. Entry into counting centres is restricted, and mobile phones are banned inside counting halls.
Over 70 crore voters participated in the two-phase polling, held on November 6 and 11. In the outgoing Assembly, the NDA held 131 seats (BJP 80, JD(U) 45, HAM(S) 4, Independents 2), while the opposition held 111 seats (RJD 77, Congress 19, CPI(ML) 11, CPI(M) 2, CPI 2).
