Tributes pour in as Portuguese footballer Quevin Castro dies aged 25
The cause of his sudden death has not yet been disclosed
Portuguese footballer Quevin Castro has died at the age of 25 after suddenly collapsing during a match in his home country.
The Lisbon Football Association confirmed the tragic news, revealing that Castro died during a friendly between his club, Real SC SAD, and Estrela da Amadora.
“The Lisbon Football Association deeply mourns the death of Quévin Castro, a player for Real SC SAD, who passed away this morning during a friendly match between Real SC SAD and Estrela da Amadora,” the association said.
“We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends and Real SC SAD during this tragic moment for Portuguese football,” it added.
The cause of his sudden death has not yet been disclosed.
Born in Portugal, Castro grew up in Norfolk, England and began his career at Sporting CP’s academy before joining English club West Bromwich Albion in 2021. He made his debut in a Carabao Cup match against Arsenal.
He later played for Burton Albion, Gateshead and Notts County. In 2023, he left West Bromwich Albion and subsequently played for York City, Chippenham Town and Eastbourne Borough and had recently returned to Portugal and joined Real Sport Clube.
Real Sport Clube also paid tribute to Castro, describing him as “far more than a player” and saying he was “a member of our family” who left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him on and off the pitch.
“At this time of grief, Real Sport Clube – Futebol, SAD extends its most sincere condolences to the family and all friends of Quévin Castro, expressing its full solidarity and unconditional support. May the memory of Quévin Castro live on in our hearts,” the club said.
Castro’s former English club, West Bromwich Albion, also expressed its condolences. The midfielder joined the club in 2021 and made his first-team debut in a Carabao Cup tie against Arsenal.
He made his league debut for West Brom in February 2022 before leaving The Hawthorns in the summer of 2023.
Castro subsequently played for York City, King’s Lynn, Chippenham, Cambridge City and Eastbourne before returning to Portugal.
