Pray from home: Dubai churches announce temporary closures

Dubai: Several churches across Dubai have announced the suspension of in-person services starting April 3, following directives from UAE authorities to ensure public safety and community well-being.

Parishes across denominations have moved quickly to comply, with many shifting to online worship while urging worshippers to avoid visiting church premises until further notice.

St. Mary’s and St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church

At St. Mary's Catholic Church in Oud Metha, leaders have confirmed that the church will remain closed to all visitors starting April 3. Good Friday services that have been scheduled for 3pm and 6pm will be streamed live through the church’s YouTube channel, allowing worshippers to participate remotely.

Similarly, St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Jebel Ali has cancelled all masses with immediate effect. No online streaming services have been announced. 

“Parishioners are requested to refrain from visiting the church premises, in the interest of safety and community well-being,” read the announcement.

The Mar Thoma Parish and St. Thomas Orthodox Cathedral

The Mar Thoma Parish in Jebel Ali has also confirmed that all services over the weekend will be conducted online. Parish leaders have noted that timings and access details for virtual gatherings will be shared with members shortly. 

“Keep the whole country and our surroundings in prayer. Pray for safety and for peace and calm in the region,” it stated.

At St. Thomas Orthodox Cathedral in Oud Metha, all services, including Good Friday observances, will be conducted online. Worshippers have been advised to attend services virtually, with timings remaining unchanged.

St. Mina Coptic Orthodox Church

Meanwhile, St. Mina Coptic Orthodox Church in Jebel Ali has announced that Friday’s liturgy on April 3 has been cancelled, along with all other services and activities until further notice.  

Church authorities have described the move as a precautionary and temporary measure, taken out of concern for public safety.

“We pray that God keeps everyone safe, and we will keep you updated with any new developments. May God be with you and protect you always,” it remarked.

Community urged to cooperate

Church leaders across Dubai have reiterated the importance of adhering to official guidelines and avoiding gatherings during this period. Many have highlighted that these steps are temporary and necessary to protect the wider community.

Parishioners have been encouraged to stay connected through digital platforms and continue their prayers from home, as churches across the emirate adapt to safety measures.
