Sabalenka, seeking her first Wimbledon title, will face Belgian 24th seed Elise Mertens
British No.1 Emma Raducanu’s Wimbledon run came to an end after a gripping third-round clash against top seed Aryna Sabalenka. The 22-year-old pushed the Belarusian to the limit before falling 7-6 (8-6), 6-4 on Centre Court.
Raducanu, ranked 40th in the world, showed poise and power throughout the contest. She came close to taking the first set after saving seven set points and earning one of her own. However, Sabalenka raised her level in the tie-break to edge ahead.
Despite breaking early and surging to a 4-1 lead in the second set, Raducanu couldn’t sustain the momentum. Lengthy rallies began to take their toll, and Sabalenka capitalised, winning five of the final six games to close out the match.
“It’s hard to take a loss like that, but I pushed the world No.1 to the limit,” Raducanu said. “That gives me belief, even if it’s tough right now.”
Coming off a decisive win over 2023 champion Marketa Vondrousova in the second round, Raducanu entered the match in confident form. Her aggressive baseline game and composure under pressure showed marked improvement, especially against a dominant player like Sabalenka.
Sabalenka, who is seeking her first Wimbledon title, will face Belgian 24th seed Elise Mertens in the fourth round.
“Emma played incredible tennis,” Sabalenka said. “She made me fight for every point. I’m sure she’ll be back in the top 10 very soon.”
