Choreographer speaks about uncertainties, family support during tough phase
Dubai: Dhanashree Verma has finally opened up about her divorce from cricketer Yuzvendra Chahal, bringing closure to a marriage that lasted four and a half years. The couple officially parted ways earlier this year.
Speaking to Humans of Bombay, Dhanashree emphasised the importance of keeping personal matters private. “There’s a reason it’s called personal life, it should remain private. A coin has two sides, and you can’t clap with one hand. Just because I choose silence doesn’t mean people can take advantage of it. It’s done and dusted, please move on,” she said. “I have my side of the story, but I’m choosing not to dwell on it. Right now, my focus is on healing and working on myself.”
On the day of the divorce she said, "I still remember when I was standing there and the verdict was about to be given. Even though we were so well-prepared mentally, I got so emotional. I started howling in front of everybody."
The choreographer and content creator also admitted to feeling uncertain about her career prospects post-divorce. “I was scared. ‘Will I get work again?’ ‘Will I be accepted?’ But I’m blessed to be in an industry that hasn’t judged me. I’m still getting work and being appreciated for my talent. Directors and producers are excited to collaborate. The industry has been very kind.”
Despite going through a painful breakup, Dhanashree still believes in love. “We all want love, who doesn’t? Yes, self-love comes first, but if something good is written in my destiny, why not? I still believe in Bollywood-style love. My friends, my parents, they all want that for me, and so do I.”
She spoke candidly about how the divorce affected her family, especially her parents. “The initial phase was very confusing for all of us. While I managed to block out negative comments, it was harder for my parents who had to face questions from relatives. There were times they felt overwhelmed and even avoided their phones. I had to tell them, ‘Don’t answer calls, just stop.’”
Throughout it all, her support system remained strong. Her friends, team, and especially her parents, helped her stay grounded. “They always reminded me to remain dignified, not act on impulse. Making this decision took courage—especially when you're walking away from someone more powerful. My parents kept telling me, ‘This isn’t who you are. You’re brave.’ And they’re proud of me for choosing peace over pressure.”
Dhanashree and Chahal met during the Covid-19 lockdown when he approached her for online dance lessons. Their friendship blossomed into love, and they married in December 2020 in Gurugram. As per legal filings, the couple separated in June 2022 and filed for divorce by mutual consent in February 2025. The divorce was finalised in March this year.
Professionally, Dhanashree continues to thrive. She was recently seen in a dance number with Rajkummar Rao in Bhool Chuk Maaf and is set to make her acting debut in the upcoming Telugu dance drama Akasam Daati Vastaava, directed by Sri Sasi Kumar and produced by Dil Raju. More updates on the film are awaited.
