Sandro Tonali could not help Italy secure a place at the World Cup, and that disappointment will still be fresh. But even in the middle of that setback, he has quietly emerged as one of the most in demand midfielders in Europe, with several top clubs now tracking his situation ahead of a possible summer move away from Newcastle United.

Manchester City

Manchester City have been linked with Tonali, but according to Fabrizio Romano, he is not their priority target. The Premier League champions are instead focusing on Elliot Anderson as their main midfield option, even though Tonali remains on their radar.

Manchester United

Manchester United have identified Tonali as a priority target as part of their planned midfield rebuild in the summer of 2026. However, he is not the only Newcastle midfielder on their list. The club are also closely looking at his teammate Bruno Guimaraes.

INEOS are keen to bring in players who are already proven in the Premier League, a strategy they pushed strongly in the last summer window. United are expected to make major changes in midfield, with Casemiro's departure and uncertainty still surrounding Bruno Fernandes’ future.

There are also doubts over Manuel Ugarte, who has not fully lived up to expectations so far, and could be offloaded if the right offer arrives. Strengthening midfield is seen as a key step if United are to compete for major trophies again.

Arsenal

Arsenal are also firmly in the mix. The Gunners are said to be very serious about signing him and had even explored a move during the January window. His versatility and control in midfield are seen as key additions for a side pushing for major honours. He can comfortably play as a 6 and a 8.

Real Madrid

Real Madrid’s interest, as revealed by TeamTalk, adds another major name to the list. Tonali’s representatives have reportedly made direct contact with the Spanish giants to signal his potential availability. He is understood to be one of several midfield options as Madrid look to refresh their squad.

Other interested clubs

Tonali’s camp has also made contact with several other European heavyweights. Liverpool and Chelsea are both aware of the situation and are monitoring developments closely.

Paris Saint Germain and Bayern Munich have also been informed and are keeping a close watch on how things unfold.

Juventus would like to bring him back to Italy, but financial limitations make a deal difficult. The same applies to other Serie A clubs such as Inter Milan and AC Milan.

Newcastle’s position

Newcastle are not under immediate pressure to sell and are expected to demand a fee between £80 million and £100 million if they are to consider any offers.

There is also talk of a gentleman’s agreement, where the club may be open to a sale if they fail to qualify for European competition. As things stand in early April, Newcastle sit 12th in the Premier League table.

Tonali remains under contract until June 2029, with an option to extend by another year. However, the midfielder is believed to be open to a move, particularly if it gives him a chance to return to the Champions League.
