Understanding food noise: The mental chatter that fuels our cravings

The last slice of cheesecake sits temptingly in my fridge, a sweet treasure just waiting to be savoured. Even after a satisfying dinner, my mind can't help but wander back to that creamy delight. It's like a little voice teasing me with thoughts of its rich flavour and velvety texture. I know I won't be at peace until it's gone, and then my thoughts will shift to what delicious meal I’ll conjure up next. As I contemplate that final bite, the anticipation builds—it's not just cheesecake; it's a moment of bliss that I can almost taste!
Food has always been my anchor, a comforting presence during every emotional storm. Whether I'm dealing with stress, celebrating a moment, or feeling down, my first instinct is to find a meal that matches the mood.
Yet, while that familiarity brings me joy, it also complicates my journey to a healthier lifestyle.
I often find my mind consumed by an internal chatter, where the allure of food competes with my desire to feel good in my own skin. Recently, a friend shared an intriguing insight with me — it could actually be something called food noise, she said.
Research shows that food noise can stem from various triggers. For me, emotional states play a significant role. Stress makes me crave comfort foods. When I'm celebrating, food takes centre stage in my mind as a part of the joy. Social situations, like gatherings with friends or even just seeing delicious advertisements, heighten these thoughts. Additionally, habits formed over the years create an expectation that food should be a go-to solution for my ups and downs. The association between food and comfort is ingrained, making it hard to separate the two.
What is food noise?
According to the health website clevelandclinic.org, endocrinologist Dr Reena Bose, MD, explained that food noise is a feeling of continuous hunger.
Apparently, some people have a persistent chatter in their mind about food – cravings, thoughts of what to eat, and distractions centred on meals. “It can be exhausting and can interfere with our ability to make mindful choices,” the expert explained in the article.
What causes food noise?
Various factors can trigger food noise. Saumya Mishra, a Dubai-based nutritionist and founder of Beyond Scale FZC, emphasises that the most common causes of food noise today are stress, anxiety, and body image issues. "The shorter attention spans and reel culture prevalent on social media have negatively impacted our focus, mood, and food choices," she explained, "leading to disordered eating habits like emotional eating and restrictive diets."
Identifying food noise can involve recognising persistent thoughts about food when not hungry, difficulty focusing on work due to food-related thoughts, eating for emotional comfort, engaging in restrictive dieting for body image or weight loss, and frequent impulsive eating.
Effective strategies for managing food noise include eating slowly and savoring each bite, practicing mindfulness by avoiding distractions during meals, and learning to distinguish between physical and emotional hunger. Mishra noted, "Maintaining a balanced and nourishing diet rich in good fats, protein, and fiber can greatly help," and she added, "Seeking support from a dietitian or nutritionist is also beneficial."
Dietary changes that can help include ensuring a balanced diet, optimal protein intake, and including healthy fats like avocados and nuts. Mental health conditions such as Binge Eating Disorder, Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, Orthorexia, anxiety, depression, OCD, body dysmorphia, and ADHD can intensify food noise. "Professional help should be sought when lifestyle changes are insufficient, self-regulation is difficult," she warned, "or when there is a sense of loss of control regarding intrusive thoughts about food."
"Navigating the relationship with food is a challenge, but finding balance is possible. Each day is an opportunity to make choices that honour both emotional needs and health goals," added Mishra.
