Muscat: Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) technologies hold the key to the future of Oman's oil production, John Malcolm, Petroleum Development's Oman (PDO) managing director, said at the inauguration of Technology Day and Exhibition at the Oil and Gas Exhibition Centre on Saturday.

"Over the past forty years, we have introduced ever more complex technology to get the most out of the sultanate's oilfields," he told a gathering of senior officials and media.

"Oman is blessed with plentiful oil and gas resources but it also has unusually complex geology that make the task of realising this wealth particularly challenging," he said.

"Over the years we have learnt that it was only by applying the right technology that we would manage to unlock Oman's full wealth potential."

Speaking about the importance of the application of cutting-edge technologies at PDO, Malcolm said: "In recent years, PDO has embarked on several enhanced oil recovery projects aimed at sustaining PDO's oil production for the long term. These projects are based in many instances on the state-of-the-art technologies."

PDO's Technology Day and Exhibition, which is part of the company's celebrations of the 40th anniversary of its first oil export cargo, is aimed at showcasing the advanced technologies that PDO relies on to sustain oil and gas production.
