Who is Sanjay Roy in Kolkata doctor rape-murder case that shocked the medical fraternity across India?
Dubai: Sanjay Roy, who was arrested for the rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, was identified by police as an alcoholic and a porn addict.
The Special Investigation Team (SIT) believes he was under the influence of alcohol while committing the crime on Friday morning.
When the police began questioning him, he appeared calm and relaxed and admitted to committing the crime. The investigation also revealed that his mobile phone contained many pornographic clips.
According to a report in The Telegraph, Roy is said to have told the officers questioning him that he had gone to red-light areas twice on Thursday night, hours before he allegedly brutalised the young doctor.
Roy, a 33-year-old civic volunteer with the police welfare board, had unrestricted access to various departments at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

After the attack, which occurred in the hospital’s third-floor seminar hall, Roy returned to his quarters to sleep.
He later attempted to destroy evidence by washing his clothes, according to the investigation team. The victim, a 31-year-old doctor from Panihati in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district, had stayed overnight at the hospital to study.
CCTV footage captured Roy entering the emergency building at 4am and leaving 40 minutes later.
After the meal, her colleagues left and she continued with her studies. At 3am, she was seen sleeping in the room.
Around 4am, the accused entered the seminar room, sexually assaulted her. When she attempted to resist, the perpetrator throttled her.
The victim’s body was found at 7.30am, according to the Times of India.
4 failed marriages
A Bluetooth headset, which was seen hanging around Roy’s neck on the footage, was missing when he exited; a piece of it was later found near the victim’s body and matched to Roy’s mobile phone. Roy, who had a history of four failed marriages — three of which ended due to his erratic behavior and one due to his wife’s death from cancer — was arrested just before midnight on Friday.
Among five people who entered the building around the time of the murder, Roy was the only one without a legitimate reason to be there.
He confessed to the crime during interrogation, showing no remorse and reportedly stating, “Hang me if you want,” according to reports from the Times of India and NDTV.
Part of a racket
Civic volunteers are contractual staff who are recruited to assist cops in various kinds of work, including traffic management and disaster response. They are paid around Rs12,000 a month.
According to an NDTV report, Roy joined Kolkata Police’s disaster management group as a volunteer in 2019 but later transferred to the police welfare cell.
He then moved to the police outpost at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital and had access to all departments. In addition to his involvement in the crime, Roy was allegedly part of a racket at the hospital, charging patients’ relatives for admissions and beds. Although he was a civic volunteer,
Roy often posed as a police officer, wearing clothing and tags marked with “KP” (Kolkata Police) and using his connections to stay in police barracks.
He would also charge patients’ relatives for finding a bed at nearby nursing homes if they did not get a bed at the government hospital.
Many other civic volunteers thought he was actually a cop, reports said.
A case has been filed against Roy under IPC Sections 375 (rape) and 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code. On Sunday, SIT and forensic teams collected samples from the seminar hall where the crime occurred.
