The recent bombings in Iraq highlight once again the importance of containing the level of violence in the country. Without maintaining an acceptable level of security, stability and peace will be impossible to achieve.

The two bombs that exploded in Ramadi on Wednesday killed no less than 23 people, of which at least 13 were policemen. Bombings take place frequently in the country. The number of suicide bombers has just never decreased and the targets are always well chosen. As with all such attacks, the main goal is to spread fear, cause disruption and ensure the highest number of casualties, regardless of whether these casualties include innocent civilians.

As a matter of fact, in almost all of the bombings that have been carried out, civilian casualties are guaranteed — only the numbers vary from one suicide attack to another. Hence, it is high time that the security situation in Iraq is addressed and reviewed. Iraqi officials and politicians carry a great responsibility to ensure that this is done in the interest of the nation.
