Dubai: The new high-tech Hatta Border Port Crossing complex, linking the UAE and Oman, will open in a few months' time, a senior official said.

Once open, the new facility will help ensure ease of vehicular movement between the two countries. The project covers an area of 3,136 square metres.

Major General Mohammad Ahmad Al Merri, Director-General at General Directorate for Residency and Foreigners' Affairs (GDRFA), told Gulf News that more than 155,000 people use the Hatta crossing every month to travel between the UAE and Oman.

He said as part of the new Hatta Border Port Crossing project complex, the GDRFA will introduce a high-tech service to travellers with which travellers will experience a dramatic improvement in the time they spend at the border controls section.

Major General Al Merri, accompanied by top officials from GDRFA, visited the Hatta Border Port on Sunday to inspect the travellers' movement and the work flow.

"The Hatta Border Port crossing is one of the main links for transporters between the UAE and Oman and the new project is aimed at boosting the means of transportation between the countries," he said, adding the work on the border crossing project is in progress and is expected to be ready soon.

The new border project consists of a main building with ground floor and two floors. It contains a hall equipped with modern and high-tech services to complete the transactions of travellers and offices for employees with special places for break, cafeteria and meeting rooms.

The project also consists of four counters for completing the procedures of departing passengers and five counters for arriving passengers.

Special path

All the buildings are equipped with covered tracks, and each track is dedicated to attend to two cars at the same time, which increases the speed of traffic flow and reduces traffic jams during the peak period.

In addition, a special path has been dedicated for trucks, easing the movement of travellers through the port.

It contains a hall equipped with highly sophisticated services to complete transactions of travellers in record time.

The project also includes service buildings and parking lots.

The Hatta border crossing will boast three lanes exclusively to channel incoming vehicles from Oman, besides one for trucks, another for uninsured vehicles with the third branching out into five gates for various GDRFA and customs procedures.
