Dubai: Al Wasl Club are expected to make a formal announcement within “next 24 hours” on signing up Diego Maradona as their coach for the next two years.

A spokesperson of the club said that negotiations are in the final stages, even as the news has been creating ripples in the international football media since Saturday.

“This is a paradise,” Maradona, arguably the greatest footballer of all time said on arriving in Dubai, reported the Clarin newspaper of Buenos Aires.

Speculation is rife that Maradona, who paid a visit to the club on Saturday to meet up with the players and officials during training, will sign a two-year deal.

It’s learnt that Al Wasl club have tabled a proposal for the football great which the latter is expected to agree.

The 50-year-old was last seen in a coaching role with the Argentine national side during the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

He flew in to town after his visit to the Chechen Republic for the official inauguration of Grozny Stadium.

Al Wasl are currently lying fourth in the UAE Football League table having recently sacked coach Sergio Farias and are currently playing under interim coach Mubarak Khalifa.
