There’s no correct answer to the question above, because the best car is probably the car that’s best for you and your family.
But there is one type of vehicle that undoubtedly the best for the environment. It has been propelling the motor industry into the future and is already a big player in this competitive industry, worldwide: the electric car.
In 2017, a record-breaking number of new car registrations in the UK comprised electric vehicles, according to a report by The Guardian newspaper.
Even in the UAE, electric cars are garnering interest. According to a 2020 report by digital transformation consultancy Publicis Sapient, 82 per cent of UAE residents surveyed are considering an electric vehicle as their next car, while 90 per cent are considering a hybrid.
The cars’ reduced impact on the environment and overall value for money are some of the reasons for their popularity.
In terms of cost, electric cars will save you money over time. A report by the US Department of Energy states that all-electric vehicles require little maintenance. Even the brake pads last longer because they use regenerative braking to slow down – a method of converting the energy used to reduce the car’s speed into power that is stored in the car’s battery.
Car parts are also becoming more affordable as more automobile manufacturers get involved – before 2009, an electric car battery cost $33,000 (Dh121,212) and by the end of 2015, it dropped to $10,000 (Dh36,731), according to a US Department of Energy report.
And of course, they are extremely energy efficient and environmentally friendly: electric vehicles emit no tailpipe pollutants. By 2019, electric vehicle emissions throughout their lifecycle were found to be around three times lower than conventional cars, according to UK-based climate science website Carbon Brief.
