In the 1940s and 1950s, Hollywood produced some of the most stylish crime dramas ever seen, with its film noir (French for ‘dark film’) genre of filmmaking. These decades also saw the successful transition of hardboiled crime novels onto the silver screen. Dashiell Hammett’s ‘The Maltese Falcon’ and Raymond Chandler’s ‘The Big Sleep’ and ‘Double Indemnity’ are just three in a long line of fantastic films.
