Our respiratory system’s constant exposure to the outside world leaves it vulnerable to bacterial and viral infections, like the common cold, influenza and tuberculosis. Still, for centuries, people around the world have taken pre-emptive action by using medicinal herbs – and have met with much success.

Here are a few natural remedies commonly used to deal with coughs and colds, according to a December 2022 report in the National Geographic:

1. Echinacea

As one of the most well-studied herbs, echinacea has been known for its numerous effects on the immune system – it produces an increased antibody response for fighting viruses, and stimulates white blood cells to fight infection. Excellent for the immune system, this herb has chemical compounds like polysaccharides, glycoproteins and alkylamides, all of which, have medicinal effects that inhibit bacteria and viruses. It can be consumed as a tea, tincture or capsule.

2. Elderberries

Studies have found that ripe elderberries are rich in vitamin C and antioxidants. In syrup form, elderberries have been known to help reduce the duration of cold and flu symptoms. They can also reduce swelling in mucous membranes, which is a relief for patients with sinus congestion, and lessen symptoms of allergies, like sneezing and itching. It’s usually taken as a lozenge.

3. Thyme

For centuries, thyme and sage have been used for medicinal purposes, for good reason. This fragrant herb’s aromatic compounds have been known to help relieve coughs, because thyme is both antispasmodic and an expectorant. This means it helps clear bronchial mucus and also calms coughs. The herb is antibacterial and antiviral, and can be used for coughs, colds, flu, bronchitis and asthma, in the form of soothing tea.

4. Astragalus

Best used as a preventive measure, the root of the astragalus flowering plant has been found to improve the function of white blood cells, with laboratory testing even finding it increasing antibody levels in healthy people. The root may also increase immune-activating proteins in the body, which help fight off viral infections. Astragalus can be consumed as a tea, capsule or tincture.

While these herbs have been tried and tested by different cultures around the world, for generations, it’s best to check with your doctor before consuming them, especially if you’re pregnant, taking anticoagulants, or have hormone-sensitive conditions.
