Dubai: A Yemeni man has been arrested for forcing his 10-year-old daughter into marriage after the story went viral on social media, local media reported.

The girl’s father and husband as well as the religious cleric (Madhun) were arrested after it was proven that they forged the girl’s age. The case was referred to the personal status court.

The story was shared on social media platforms, with users demanding the toughest penalty against the father, husband and Madhun.

Nuha Jameel Ali Haidar is not the first teenage girl who was forced into marriage in Yemen, which is home to four million child brides, considered one of the highest rates of child marriage in the world.

Of the four million girls married before 18, 1.4 million were forced into marriage before the age of 15.
