Cairo: A Saudi man, who was wrongfully imprisoned for 19 months, has been awarded SR800,000 in compensation, a local newspaper reported.

An appeals court in the Saudi port city of Jeddah has upheld a ruling passed by a lower court awarding SR800,000 in compensation for the man, Okaz newspaper added. The man had been jailed for 19 months after being convicted in a criminal case, but he was later found to be innocent, the report said. His innocence was confirmed in a final verdict, the appeals court said.

The man filed a lawsuit requesting compensation for the harm he suffered due to his wrongful imprisonment.

In recent years, Saudi Arabia has introduced reforms to its justice system to boost human rights.
