Cairo: Saudi Arabia’s state rights watchdog today stressed the importance of protecting workers from cold winter at workplaces and residences.

The Saudi Human Rights Commission said it is necessary to protect workers from spells of cold, especially in open air areas, urging compliance with labour safety regulations.

“The kingdom has enacted systems guaranteeing the best safety and occupational health criteria,” it added in a statement.

“It is also important to provide appropriate housing [for workers] ensuring protection from the cold weather especially these days when temperatures sharply drop to levels that put workers’ health at threat,” it said.

Several Saudi areas have experienced rains and the country’s meteorology authorities have warned of heavy downpours and thunder storms in the western governorate of Yanbu.
