Cairo: Qatar has referred 409 people to prosecution for failing to observe precautions in place to limit spread of COVID-19 in the country, according to local media.

The violators include 397 persons caught while failing to wear mandatory face masks in designated places, the Qatari news agency QNA said. Eleven others are accused of flouting a four-person ride limit in cars as part of restrictions prompted by COVID-19. One more person is facing legal action for failing to abide by quarantine rules.

Qatari authorities have repeatedly urged members of the public to strictly comply with precautionary measures for their safety and that of others to contain the spread of the pandemic.

Qatar so far has recorded a tally of 174,228 coronavirus cases and 274 related fatalities.
