Sultan Haitham appoints son Theyazin as Oman’s first Crown Prince
Dubai: The eldest son of Sultan Haitham Bin Tareq of Oman, Theyazin, has become the Sultanate’s first Crown Prince following constitutional amendments approved by Sultan Haitham.
The 31-year-oldTheyazin is currently the Minister of Culture, Sports and Youth since August 2020, after his appointment in the first government formed by his father.
Sultan Haitham became the ruler of Oman following the death of Sultan Qaboos Bin Saeed on January 10, 2020.
Theyazin served as the second secretary at the Omani embassy in London. He is known for his interest in youth and sports.
Born in 1990, the new Crown Prince has a bachelor’s degree in political science from Oxford University in Britain.
The move comes a day after Sultan Haitham issued decree No.6 of 2021 and decree No.7 of 2021, on power transfer and appointment of Crown Prince as well as the statute of the Council of Oman.
Decree No.6 of 2021 calls for setting a mechanism to determine the crown prince’s powers, as well as to highlight the principle of the rule of law and the independence of the judiciary as a foundation for governance in the country.
Under the decree, the new statute shall emphasize the state’s role in ensuring more rights and freedoms for citizens, most notably equality between men and women, welfare of children, disabled people and youth. It also stresses the compulsory basic education.
Decree No.7 of 2021 regulates the functions of the Council of Oman while emphasising its role and valuable contributions to the comprehensive development process in the country.
