Kuwait: 118 expats to be sacked from Ministry of Electricity and Water
All expats working in the public sector to eventually be replaced by citizens
Kuwait City: The Ministry of Electricity and Water is preparing to terminate the contracts of 118 expats working across various departments, local media reported.
The plan to end their contract is part of the Kuwaitization policy which aims at replacing all expats working in the public sector so that 100 per cent of the governmental employees are Kuwaitis.
An informed source told Al Rai that of the 118 expats being terminated, 59 have exceeded a service period of 30 years. All of the employees that are to be sacked have been informed.
The Civil Service Commission (CSC) has requested the 626 expats be terminated, across various governmental agencies, during the 2020-2021 fiscal year, of them are the 118.
Majority Kuwaiti workforce
The Kuwaitization policy, which was first introduced in 2017, is working towards creating a majority Kuwaiti workforce, in the public sector, by 2021.
Although in December 2019, there were around 120,000 expats working in governmental positions, that number has dropped as there have been massive layoffs in recent months.
Last month, the Ministry of Social Affairs terminated the contract of 120 expats.
In September, the Civil Service Commission announced that since 2017, 13 out of the 16 government agencies have achieved Kuwaitization.
Back in August, various government agencies began laying off expats, especially those that are working in non-technical fields. Then a few weeks later, around 1,183 job contacts for expats working across 48 governmental agencies were cancelled.
