Cairo: Kuwaiti authorities are considering to oblige places serving food to install surveillance cameras as a health measure, Kuwaiti newspaper Al Rai has reported, citing well-informed sources.

The step aims at tightening control on food quality during the process of preparation and serving it to customers, thus combating fraud and ensuring compliance with hygiene rules, the sources added.

"The idea has been considered by the Public Authority for Food and Nutrition for a while. Its implementation will help increase nutritional control in installations such as restaurants and bakeries," the sources said.

In recent weeks, authorities have stepped up raids on food outlets violating hygiene rules as Kuwait is struggling to limit the spread of the new coronavirus.

Kuwait's Public Authority for Food and Nutrition (PAFN) has ordered the closure of a pastry restaurant in the area of Al Salmiya after for violating health standards and cleanliness conditions.

"The Authority will strike with an iron fist at anyone who thinks of laxity in complying with health instructions in order to ensure high quality and food safety," Hashem Al Kandari, an inspection head at the PAFN, said.
