Cairo: Bahrain has condemned the assassination of a top nuclear scientist and urged “maximum self-restraint”.

Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, Iran’s leading nuclear scientist, was assassinated earlier this week near the Iranian capital Tehran, fuelling regional tensions and triggering Iranian vows of retaliation.

Fakhrizadeh, the head of the Defence Ministry’s research and innovation agency, is thought to be behind Iran’s dubious nuclear programme.

The Bahraini Foreign Ministry stressed the necessity of making concerted efforts to calm tensions and safeguard stability in the region.

“In view of what the region is experiencing, the Kingdom of Bahrain is calling on all parties to exercise maximum self-restraint to avoid the region’s slide to new levels of instability and threat to peace,” the ministry added in a statement.
