2 jailed in Bahrain over coronavirus isolation violations
Offenders had returned from COVID-19 country, were ordered to go into home quarantine
Cairo: A Bahraini court has sentenced two people to three months in prison each after convicting them of violating mandatory home isolation related to the novel coronavirus, the second such verdict in the kingdom in a month.
The Junior Criminal Court, which delivered the ruling on Tuesday, also ordered the two be put under house arrest during the three months and be subjected to electronic surveillance, Bahraini newspaper Al Bilad reported, quoting the prosecution chief.
The case started when the two defendants had arrived from a virus-hit country and were ordered to go into mandatory home quarantine in line with Bahrain's regulations for passengers arriving from countries stricken by the coronavirus.
However, monitoring showed their non-compliance. One of them had left the house for the Bahrain International Airport. The second headed to the central market, bought fish and documented the act on a video that he uploaded on social media, the report said.
Earlier this month, a Bahraini court had handed similar sentences to a businessman and a lawyer on the same charges.
