Look: Pakistan PM Imran Khan orders tents for the homeless

As Pakistan braces for winter, tents set up for homeless; shelters to be built soon

Dubai: As snow has blanketed parts of northern Pakistan and with some places recording sub-zero temperatures, tents had been ordered to be set up in Lahore and other Pakistani cities for homeless people — until shelters are built.

Thousands of Twitter users hailed the move by the country’s Prime Minister, Imran Khan for his efforts in taking care of the many homeless who suffer during extreme winter months.

On Saturday, Khan tweeted that increasingly cold weather had necessitated the move. He added that other spots were also being identified for shelters to be built.

@ImranKhanPTI tweeted: “I have asked Chief Minister of Punjab [Usman Buzdar] to set up tents for people sleeping on footpaths and provide them food until the Panah Gahs (shelters) are built, as the weather is turning increasingly cold. Peshawar and Karachi spots also being located.”

On November 10, Khan had laid foundation stone of a Shelter Home Project or a Panah Gah in Lahore for people who spend nights on the streets.

He posted pictures with the caption: “Today, I laid the foundation for first of the five shelters for the homeless in Lahore and one in Pindi to be followed by shelters in other cities. We are committed to building a social net for our poor citizens so everyone has a shelter over his/her head and access to health and education.”

Like many others, Twitter user @MohsinBilalKhan praised Khan and wrote: “Thank you Mr PM! We are with you on this! We are going to assist you in this! #PakistanZindabad.”

Tweeps @XULQIMOON added: “Good initiative sir. Nobody paid heed to this side (poor) before. Humanity is reflecting through this gesture.”

And, @vegan_mom1 tweeted: “What a great human being, great leader with a greatest vision, that’s my PM @ImranKhanPTI.”
