COVID-19: US deaths near 600,000; India cases at April low

Washington: The COVID-19 pandemic’s US death toll approached 600,000, even as cases and fatalities slowed. New York state is nearing President Joe Biden’s vaccination goal of 70 per cent of adults receiving at least one dose by July 4.

India’s new infections fell to the lowest level since April 1, and the number of people recovering from the virus in the country each day outnumbers new cases. Infections and hospital admissions in Zambia hit a record.

A US study showed emergency care or hospitalisation is extremely rare among fully vaccinated people who contract coronavirus. Biden has expressed his support for Japan’s efforts to carry out a safe Summer Olympics, Nikkei reported.
