Dubai: His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of UAE and Ruler of Dubai, today announced the launch of the ‘One Billion Meals’ endowment project to secure food aid for vulnerable communities.

Tweeting on the occasion, Sheikh Mohammed said: “Brothers and sisters, as per our annual tradition with the advent of the holy month, we are pleased to announce the launch of the ‘One Billion Meals’ endowment project in Ramadan. Our goal is to provide hundreds of millions of meals sustainably for decades to come through this endowment project, ensuring ongoing charity for the people of the UAE and uninterrupted goodness.”

He added: “One out of every ten people in the world suffers from hunger. As believers, it is our humanitarian, moral, and Islamic duty, especially during the month of fasting, to extend a helping hand to those in need and feed the hungry.”

In Islam, an endowment (Waqf) is an ongoing act of goodness, such as a charity project that supplies water from a well, for example. “A little lasting contribution is better than a significant amount that is eventually cut off. May Allah guide us all towards all that is good and protect our nation from all that is evil,” Sheikh Mohammed said in the tweet.

Through an integrated food supply ecosystem, the One Billion Meals project aims to provide sustainable food aid to underserved populations, as part of the UAE’s contributions to global efforts.
