62 women from Kerala launch books at first-of-its-kind event at Sharjah Book Fair
Writers include homemakers, teachers, daily wage workers and retired government staff
Sharjah: More than 60 women from Kerala have launched books across diverse genres in what turned out to be a first-of-its-kind event at the ongoing Sharjah International Book Fair.
The authors come from various backgrounds, including retired government employees, homemakers, teachers, doctors, and journalists. Breaking barriers and overcoming challenges, even women who are daily wage workers and from economically disadvantaged communities fulfilled their long-cherished dreams of unveiling their books at such a prestigious event.
Although 62 books by women were released, only 27 authors were able to attend the fair. These women, hailing from Kasaragod, Thiruvananthapuram and other parts of Kerala, have written novels, short stories, poetry and essays, covering topics from astrology to health.
“I feel very proud to have my book released here. I am grateful for the support of my family and well-wishers in helping me reach this milestone,” said Mridula, a teacher, sharing her excitement.
The women got the opportunity to publish their works, thanks to Pennillam Ezhuthidam, a literary venture based in Kerala’s Kannur district, which seeks to empower lesser-known writers, particularly women. The organisation, established in December last year, offers support and platforms for these writers to showcase their literary talent. It began as a group of 40 members and has since grown.
A thankful author Anitha Devi said, “This is a platform for everyone.”
“I’m truly happy with this achievement,” said Smita Kodanad, another author.
“We welcome more book lovers who wish to realise their dreams,” said Raji Aravind from Pennillam Ezhuthidam.
