Weekly virtual reality trips let German seniors explore the world from their chairs
In a German retirement home, residents are exploring the world without ever boarding a plane. Thanks to virtual reality (VR) headsets, elderly residents now "travel" to exotic locations, historic cities, and breathtaking natural landscapes from the comfort of their chairs.
The initiative, running successfully for a year, is led by care assistant Annette Keil. "I would say it's important, yes, because then they also experience something different," Keil says. Once a week, seniors participate in immersive virtual journeys that stimulate their minds and provide a break from daily routines.
The project aims to combat isolation and cognitive decline by offering sensory-rich experiences that spark joy, curiosity, and conversation. For many residents who can no longer travel physically, VR has become a window to the world.
This creative use of technology is proving that age doesn't have to limit exploration — change how we do it.
