Massive fire erupts in telecoms central Ramses building in Cairo

Dubai: A massive fire broke out Monday in a historic telecommunications building in Cairo’s Ramses district, disrupting communications across the Egyptian capital and prompting urgent evacuation and rescue efforts, local media reported.

Flames tore through the nearly century-old Central telecommunications facility, one of the city's oldest and most critical hubs for telecom infrastructure, as thick smoke billowed over the densely populated area. Emergency services and Civil Protection units responded swiftly and worked to contain the blaze, which quickly engulfed large sections of the building.

The health ministry said in a statement that 14 people had been injured in the fire. There were no reports of fatalities.

Administrative security managed to evacuate most employees, though several were briefly trapped inside.

Some, in a desperate attempt to escape the spreading fire, reportedly tried to jump from windows before being rescued. An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the fire. The Central Ramses building holds significant historical importance.
