Dozens killed in deadly attack on police school in Algeria

Algiers: At least 43 people were killed and 38 wounded in a bomb attack east of Algiers on Tuesday, the Algerian interior ministry said.

A ministry statement carried by the official APS news agency, said the attack targeted a paramilitary gendarmerie training school at Les Issers district of Boumerdes, 60km east of the capital.

The ministry statement said that the death toll was a "preliminary estimate" for the attack.

A security official at the school said the attack occurred as young applicants were in line, waiting to register at the local police academy.

The attacker drove a car packed with explosives at the main entrance to the school as candidates waited for an entry exam outside. Civilians as well as police officers were among the victims, according to witnesses.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack.

Tuesday's attack comes as Algeria's newspapers reported an attack on Sunday in which extremists killed 11 members of the security forces and a civilian in an ambush in the east of the country.
